Short answer: Most small business website redesigns cost $2,000 to $8,000. Custom builds with bespoke design, complex features or many pages usually start around $10,000. At the other end, a simple refresh of a small site that reuses your existing content can cost a few hundred dollars. Plan for ongoing hosting and maintenance too, which can range from about $10 a month for basic hosting to several hundred for full support.
“How much does a new website cost?” is one of the hardest questions to get a straight answer to. Quotes for what sounds like the same project can range from $500 to $50,000. This guide explains what you actually get at each price, what drives the cost up, the costs people forget, and what to budget after launch.
The ranges below come from our own experience pricing and building sites since 2016, checked against published industry pricing guides.
Website redesign cost at a glance
| Type of redesign | Typical cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Simple refresh of a small site | $500 to $2,000 | Modern template, your existing content, up to about 5 pages |
| Small business redesign | $2,000 to $8,000 | Custom-styled design, 5 to 15 pages, some new copy, SEO basics |
| Custom website | $10,000 and up | Bespoke design, strategy, new content, integrations, more pages |
| Large or enterprise site | $25,000 to $75,000+ | Many page types, complex features, multiple teams and approvals |
Who builds it matters as much as what you build. Published pricing guides typically put freelancers at around $2,000 to $8,000, boutique agencies at roughly $5,000 to $25,000, mid-sized agencies at $15,000 to $45,000, and enterprise agencies well above that. A DIY site builder costs a few hundred dollars a year, plus your time.
What drives the cost of a redesign
Number and variety of pages
Ten pages that share one layout cost far less than ten pages that each need their own design. Count the types of pages (home, service, location, blog, contact), not just the total.
Template or custom design
Adapting a proven template to your brand is fast and affordable. A fully custom design, with research, wireframes and multiple design rounds, is where most of the cost of a $10,000+ project goes.
Content and copywriting
Reusing your existing text keeps costs down. Professional copywriting for every page often adds thousands of dollars, and it is one of the most common items left out of a quote.
Features and integrations
Online booking, quote forms connected to a CRM, ecommerce, member areas, calculators and multi-language support all add design, development and testing time.
SEO migration
Keeping your search traffic through a redesign takes work: mapping every old URL to a new one, preserving content that ranks, setting up redirects and checking Search Console after launch. It is easy to skip, and skipping it is the most common way redesigns lose traffic.
Platform
Modern static sites, WordPress, Webflow and Shopify all have different build and running costs. The right one depends on who will edit the site and what it needs to do.
Hidden costs to budget for
- Copywriting if your existing content needs rewriting.
- Photography: stock licenses or a photo shoot.
- SEO migration and redirects, if not included.
- Plugins, themes and app subscriptions.
- Hosting, domain and maintenance after launch.
- Revisions beyond what the quote includes.
Ask for these to be listed in the quote, either included or priced separately, before you sign.
Website maintenance and hosting costs
A website isn’t a one-time cost. After launch you need hosting, a domain, security updates, backups and someone to make changes.
Published industry guides put typical small business website maintenance at roughly $50 to $500 a month, depending on how much hands-on support is included. The range is wide because it covers very different things:
| Level | What it covers | Typical cost |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting only | Hosting, SSL certificate, uptime | From about $10 a month |
| Basic maintenance | Hosting plus updates, security and backups | Roughly $25 to $100 a month |
| Full care plan | All of the above, plus monthly content changes and support | $100 to $500 a month |
Modern static sites need much less maintenance than plugin-heavy WordPress sites: there are fewer moving parts to update and less to secure. That is part of why we can host small business sites from $10 a month. Our plans:
| Plan | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Hosting | $10 / month | Hosting, SSL certificate and backups |
| Care | $49 / month | Hosting, plus updates and up to 30 minutes of edits each month |
| Growth | $149 / month | Care, plus monthly Google Business Profile posts, review responses and a short report |
When a $500 redesign makes sense
Not every business needs a $10,000 website. If you run a local business with a good reputation and an outdated site, you usually need:
- A fast, mobile-friendly site that looks current.
- Your services, service area, reviews and phone number front and center.
- Clean SEO basics so you don’t lose what you already rank for.
- Your existing content, reorganized and tightened, not rewritten from scratch.
Here is what that looks like in practice: the current homepage of a Des Moines-area HVAC company, and the redesign concept we built for it from its existing content and reviews.
That scope can be done quickly and affordably on a proven template. It is exactly what our $500 website redesign covers: up to five pages, two revision rounds, live in about a week, and you see your new homepage before you pay.
It isn’t the right fit for online stores, complex integrations, large sites or a full rebrand. Those are custom web design projects.
How to get an accurate quote
Give every agency or freelancer the same brief:
- Your current site URL and what isn’t working.
- The pages you need, and which content can be reused.
- Must-have features: booking, quote forms, ecommerce, integrations.
- Who will edit the site after launch.
- Your timeline and budget range.
Then compare like for like: what is included, how many revision rounds, whether SEO migration and redirects are covered, who owns the site and domain, and what hosting and maintenance will cost afterwards.
Red flags in a website quote
- No mention of redirects or SEO for a site that already gets traffic.
- You won’t own the domain or the site. Always keep the domain in your name.
- Unclear revision limits that turn into extra invoices.
- Mandatory, expensive hosting with no option to move.
- A very low price with no defined scope. Cheap is fine; undefined isn’t.
The bottom line
Budget $2,000 to $8,000 for a typical small business redesign and $10,000 or more for a custom build, plus ongoing hosting and maintenance. If your business mainly needs its existing site to look current, load fast and convert visitors into calls, a fixed-scope redesign can cost a fraction of that.
